The Mandeville Mosaic

The Mandeville Mosaic is a large-scale public art piece installed on the UC San Diego campus in September of 2022. It was created with the generous support of the Russell Foundation Grant and the Undergraduate Fellowship Grant.

This work draws inspiration from The Great Mosque of Damascus and the city of San Diego. It is meant to symbolize student’s entrance into a sacred space of learning. The inclusion of native plants and the ocean are meant to call attention to this work’s presence on the unceded territory of the Kumeyaay Nation. Over 73 San Diego residents completed the community outreach survey to inform the design of this mosaic.

Community Outreach:

Community input was very important to the creation and design of the Mandeville Mosaic. To inform the design of this artwork, 73 San Diego residents were asked about their experience living in the city. This data was then synthesized to create the final design. Two local artists and three professors were also interviewed to ensure the project was well-informed and representative of San Diego. Community outreach efforts culminated into a mosaic workshop open to the public.
